About the studio
After 10 years building software for corporations, I decided to work for causes that actually matter.
How I got here
I used to build software for Fortune 500 companies. The pay was good. The work was... fine. But after designing the thousandth identical button for yet another “values driven” company backed by venture capital, I had to face reality.
What was I actually building? Who was I helping? And why was I spending my best years making rich companies richer?
Meanwhile, my mother-in-law needed help with the website for a men's shelter where she was volunteering. It was bare-bones, poorly designed, and not helping them accomplish their goals.
What's worse, I was shocked to learn they were already working with a Wordpress agency. They were being charged an arm and a leg, and barely getting anything useful out of it.
They clearly needed me as much as I needed them.
Now I only work with progressive nonprofits—organizations fighting for causes I believe in. Environmental justice. Civil rights. Social equity. The fights that determine what kind of world we leave behind.
The values that guide my work
We are in an emergency
It's no longer a question of “will things get bad?” They are bad, and they will only get worse unless each person contributes what they can to fight for their cause. This is how I can best contribute.
Privilege = responsibility
Each of us is participating in an exploitative economic system. If you have skills the market values, it's incumbent on you to find a way to put them to good use.
Visibility is momentum
Protests work because they make dissent visible. This work allows me to help you be visible. It also allows me to show up for tech workers and offer a reminder that they can take action too.
Democratize Technology
Why should tech giants be the only ones with access to good design and technology that works? Organizations working to move the world forward deserve better.
